We talked about the common mistakes like not knowing your customer, unnecessarily guarding the idea or product, not having basic understanding of domains, having fear of unknown, assuming miracles overnight etc.. in the previous two posts.

In this last post of the series let’s look at some more mistakes which I have found entrepreneurs doing in general which prevents their growth and keeps then either stagnant or slowly pushes them to close the business.

6. ๐‘ซ๐’ ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’Œ๐’†๐’†๐’‘ ๐’…๐’˜๐’†๐’๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’๐’ ๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ๐’” ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐’…๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’š๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’…๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’”๐’Š๐’๐’๐’”??? – I have seen many who despite finding an answer to a problem keep dwelling upon it and not taking that first step towards making that call. One of the most important lessons I always advise and comes from my experience is that sometimes the best course of action is to make a call and just move forward. As a young company, nothing is ever perfect, but if you believe in an idea or strategy, you just need to move forward and manage the risks as you go.

We are here to run a business and not to balance each other’s opinion. If you feel the decision is right and in the best interest of the company just go for it. After all that’s the only risk business asks for isn’t it. If you try and avoid voting everytime among the team you are actually killing the opportune time for the decision to be taken.

A partner should be one who can stand for your business not only in terms of work they do as for that you can always have employees but by the values and image they carry. Can you business brand and your partners brand be interchanged without a loss and if the answer is yes go for it. Else you are constructing a monument with wrong bricks in the base. Tomorrow when it shakes that’s when you will realize. Always look for skills, potential, intellect which compliments you and never ever get into social pressures for taking somebody as a partner.

Finally a small tip – Do you have a consistency in maintaining contact with your key people in business like vendors, customers etc… If not schedule for yourself a consistent calendar like weekly for your inner circle, quarterly for acquaintances etc…

In today’s world how can you remain ignorant of IT or sales or marketing. How can you not know the power of social media? You may not be the expert in handling them, but having basic understanding as to how to get it done from experts and how much to pay for it is a must else you will find yourself spending fortunes over small things thus stressing your business big way.

You have built a product for customers whom you don’t know and anybody coming to you to buy you are ready to sell. However when it comes to taking services you rely mostly on the people whom you know. And then if you belong to the category with mistake no 3 mentioned above then my dear you are in a trap. Because people known to you know your limitations and will do all that they can to extract gems out of you in return of stones. So when you are in a market to serve unknowns then be courageous to get served from unknowns as well.

I have news for them: Nobody’s coming and youโ€™re not going to โ€˜go viral.โ€™ Services donโ€™t spontaneously go viral. High virality is almost always the product of early, deliberate and consistent “reach out to market” decisions. Spend some serious time thinking about how and why people are going to discover and share what youโ€™re building and if you are not sharing why will others.

For them they feel that this is all they have and want to guard it like anything. They think no one else out there have ever thought about this and if it comes in air somebody will catch it. Believe me there are three big myths you need to break.
~ Number 1 – Be rest assured somebody around you knows better than you about the idea and have thought of it.
~ Number 2 – An idea or a product or service by no means is business. Business is all about what you do with that idea or product or service.
~ Number 3 – You are not the best one around. There are people who can do better than you.
So what you need to do is to look out for support in areas where you are weak and reach out to those capable ones to help you climb the ladder of market share quickly and before others do. Remember you alone won’t be able to do everything.

Being the last post for this series let me take you through in brief with the steps of ๐’•๐’‚๐’Œ๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’Ž๐’†๐’‚๐’”๐’–๐’“๐’†๐’… ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’•๐’” ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐’†๐’๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’•๐’“๐’‚๐’๐’”๐’‡๐’๐’“๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’๐’”

There are two elements and most of the times they are common for all businesses when it comes to the journey of transformation.

The first is related to spotting emerging trends that will define successful business models in the future. These trends may be nascent today, but have high upside potential for the future. Experience suggests that digital experience, advocacy marketing and cross border opportunities are three important themes going forward.

The second element relates to the institutionalization of change. A strong foundation for the transformation through wider technology access and superior people management processes is equally critical to define success.

Digital is increasingly influencing the purchase decisions of consumers for both services and products equally. So in today’s terms the transformation can never be thought off without putting enough emphasis on the digital revamp.

When we talk about taking measured bets the emphasis is to reinforce the customer confidence in our products and services even while we are refreshing our offerings, ways to offer and our identity also at times. These changes which we are doing for our transformation should be explained in detail to those clients who are with us since long and forms a base for us sustaining till now. We can’t let them go at any cost for that matter.

It is also about developing and enhancing customer advocacy, cross border attempts, gaining favorable access to technology, managing people challenge and thereby developing strategies to combat the ever changing market place forces.

We looked at the support pillars of optimizing the trade spend to start that journey with a positive note by seeing some improvements from the stagnant position we were in, thereby enhancing our belief on the process and also imbibing some confidence in us.

Now some methods and techniques to approach this trade spend optimization. Lets dive deeper from here on as now we know the temperature of the water and also have a fair idea as to what sort of species we may find down there and have prepared ourselves satisfactorily for that.

For any spend in the business there should be a strategy and reason. So its important to set

Various other parameters are also to be looked at during this process like
~ Which channel partners to work with and how to compare the cost vs performance matching of each one of them.
~ Complete portfolio of products current and of near future needs to be provided clarity in terms of cost to company and also revenue to company – as this will decide how much and when to spend criteria
~ Most importantly the tools and techniques with proper discipline imbibed in tracking each and every revenue and spend needs to be developed. Maximizing each incoming penny and minimizing each outgoing one should become the motto of the operations.

Remember a holistic approach needs to be undertaken when pushing to improve the effectiveness of trade spends. This may include multiple facetsโ€”right from selecting winning channels to partnering with, to being rigorous in on-ground execution.

Then comes one more important task and that is to categorize the spends on externally controlled and internally impacted ones. Some are clearly structural and regulationโ€“led which will take longer to evaluate or will simply remain and cannot be worked upon a lot. However, the internal ones can be checked early to prevent unnecessary complexity. Its safe to assume here that most internal constraints & thereby expenses arrive out of the nonโ€“integration of outcomes across all functions of business.

Best way is to always take an endโ€“toโ€“end view of the outcomes; this prevents functions from taking isolated calls to optimize a set of local KPIs instead of focusing on the larger organizational objectives.
